God’s Spirit in the OT Economy

The following chart indicates how God’s Spirit or spirit is employed in the OT economy.

Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance lists approximately one hundred direct references to the Spirit of God in the entire Old Testament. Approximately seventy-five, or about three-fourths, of the total references to the Spirit in the Old Testament describe Him as influencing men externally and in some cases at least, using them instrumentally. On the other hand only approximately one-fourth of the references to the Spirit in the Old Testament represent him as in some manner inhabiting man internally, though not necessarily permanently (Carter, The Person and Ministry of the Holy Spirit, 60).
